The Western Australian Science Curriculum provides opportunities for children to develop an understanding of important scientific concepts and processes, the practices used to develop scientific knowledge and its application to our lives.
At Springfield Primary School Science is taught in combination by the Specialist Science teacher and classroom teachers. Children from Years Pre-primary to Year 6 are taught the four content strands of Earth and Space, Biological, Chemical and Physical Sciences on a two year rolling program, with two of the strands covered by the specialist each year. Classroom teachers cover the remaining two strands each year and also incorporate Science through a STE(A)M (Science, Technology, Engineering, (Art) and Maths) in integrated inquiry learning challenges.
The Science program at Springfield is delivered in our purpose built Science Lab and is designed to develop children’s curiosity, willingness to explore, ask questions and speculate on the changing world we live in. Primary Connections resource kits support Springfield staff teaching the content of the Australian Curriculum whilst linking Science to Literacy. The 5Es model of inquiry – Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate are incorporated throughout the teaching and learning programs.
